The Institute

Independent, nonprofit, and built to be cited.

Colibrí Institute strengthens venture capital ecosystems by producing open research, informing the capital and policy systems that determine who builds and who benefits from technology, and coordinating stakeholders to turn evidence into durable action.

Evidence becomes operational when it is translated into the language of the people who allocate.

Pillar

Research and field intelligence

Rigorous, open-access research that improves how venture capital functions, with particular relevance for emerging and underrepresented ecosystems.

Pillar

Policy and capital systems

Informing technology policy where venture capital shapes who builds and benefits from artificial intelligence, anchored on increasing capital deployment to founders, managers, and the organizations that build ecosystems.

Pillar

Convening and field building

Serving as a neutral convener through allocator and manager dialogues, multi-stakeholder convenings, and university partnerships.

Governance

The research independence policy.

We determine our research agenda, our methods, our analysis, our interpretation, and our publication decisions. Research sponsors, funders, data partners, and commissioning organizations have no role in any of them, and no right of review before publication.

Colibrí Institute and Colibrí Strategies are separate organizations with separate governance, separate finances, and separate channels. The Institute publishes research. Strategies is a consulting firm. No client relationship of Strategies influences what the Institute studies or reports, and the two do not share owned channels or assets.

We describe systems, incentives, and patterns in data. We do not evaluate or rank individual firms, funds, or people in our published work. We report associations rather than causes, and we publish results that do not support our expectations at the same volume as the results that do.

Board of Directors

Six directors, including both co-founders and four independent directors from venture capital, institutional investing, and research.

Funding on the record

Each output names its funding. The Architecture of Returns and Why Emerging Venture Capital Managers Matter are Institute funded with no external sponsor.

Data licence

Fund performance data licensed from commercial providers and named in each paper.

Corrections

We publish our errata. See the policy

Partner with the Institute

Four ways institutions work with us.

Each one is governed by the same policy: we set the agenda, the method, and the findings, and no funder has a role in any of them.

Mode 01

Strategic research sponsorship

Underwrite a white paper or a note. Sponsors are acknowledged on the published work and have no role in the research.

Mode 02

Co-development and embedded research

Data partnerships and joint studies with institutions that hold data the field needs analyzed.

Mode 03

Custom policy and capital analysis

Commissioned analysis for allocators, foundations, and public bodies working on allocation policy.

Mode 04

Field building and convening

Co-host an allocator dialogue or a multi-stakeholder convening built around published evidence.

Support the research

Open access is a decision, and it is why the work travels.

Publishing openly is what puts our findings in front of an investment committee that has never heard of us, in a policy comment letter, and in the syllabus of a course we will never teach. Support from institutions and individuals is what extends that reach.
