How we handle your information.

Colibrí Institute is a California nonprofit organization recognized as tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. For anything in this policy, write to hello@colibri.institute.

When you download from the database. To export a view from our database, we ask for your email address. With it we record the time, which table you exported, the filters and sort you used, the number of rows, and the page address. We keep this as a record of downloads, to understand how the database is used and to prevent abuse. Giving your email to download does not sign you up for anything.

When you ask to hear from us. The download form has an optional box, unticked by default, that reads "Send me new research and findings from Colibrí Institute." If you tick it, we store the exact wording you agreed to and the time you agreed, and we add your address to the Institute's research newsletter. You can also subscribe to our newsletter, Findings, directly through Substack. Either way, every message includes a link to unsubscribe.

When you use a diagnostic. Our LP and GP diagnostics run on Typeform. We receive the answers you enter, along with any contact details you choose to give, and we use them to provide the assessment and to improve our research tools.

When you write to us. If you email us, we receive your address and whatever you include, and we use it to reply.

When you browse. Like most websites, ours collects some information automatically: your browser and device type, pages visited, the site that referred you, and an approximate location derived from your IP address. Our host, Squarespace, sets cookies needed to run the site and to measure visits, and we use Google Analytics to understand which research is read. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

The database publishes information about venture firms, funds, companies and the people who lead them. It is built from public regulatory filings, chiefly SEC Form D and Form ADV, from public reports published by limited partners, and, in a separately labelled tier, from what firms say about themselves on their own websites. It never includes data licensed from commercial vendors. Demographic information about a person appears only where that person or their firm has publicly disclosed it, and nothing is inferred from a name or a photograph. If you are named and believe something is inaccurate or should be reviewed, write to hello@colibri.institute and we will look at it promptly. Information that appears in a public filing will generally remain, because the filing is the public record, but we will correct any error we made in reading it.

We use a small number of service providers who handle personal information on our behalf and only to provide their service to us.

Substack and Typeform also have their own privacy policies for the pages they host. We may disclose information if the law requires it, to protect the rights and safety of the Institute or others, or to a successor organization if the Institute's work is transferred.

We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not pass the email addresses collected on this site to Colibrí Strategies, to research partners or to anyone else for their own use. We do not add anyone to a mailing list without their agreement.

Download records are kept for as long as they help us understand how the database is used, and no longer than necessary for that purpose. Newsletter subscriptions last until you unsubscribe. Emails and diagnostic responses are kept for as long as they are useful for the purpose you sent them. Whenever you ask us to delete your information, we will, unless the law requires us to keep it.

You can unsubscribe from any message we send using the link it contains. You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, by writing to hello@colibri.institute. We will respond within 45 days, and we will not treat you differently for asking.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and you can opt out of Google Analytics with Google's browser add-on. Our site does not currently respond to Do Not Track signals, because there is no common standard for them, but we do not track you across other sites.

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have the rights described above along with the rights to restrict or object to our processing, to data portability, and to complain to your local data protection authority. We rely on your consent for newsletters and on our legitimate interest in running and improving a public research database for download records, analytics and security. Our service providers process information in the United States.

California residents may ask whether we disclose personal information to third parties for their direct marketing. We do not.

This site is written for investment professionals and researchers. It is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us information, write to us and we will delete it.

We use reasonable safeguards to protect the information we hold. Download records can be written by the public database but cannot be read back through it, and only the Institute can see them. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot promise absolute security.

If we change this policy, we will post the new version here and update the effective date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use information we already hold, we will tell the people affected before it takes effect.
